As an AARP Washington State spokesperson Bruce Carlson said he sees a number of his organization s memberships given away as 50th birthday presents. He thinks several of them are given as jokes to commemorate the milestone event, but being an AARP member is serious business.
Even if you feel like you re too young for AARP, look at the insurance, travel and financial investments, there are a lot of practical reasons to join, he said.
We re actually almost to 1 million members here in Washington, Carlson said. Our membership is growing. People are finding value in the services we re doing.
With more than 39 million members, AARP is the leading nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization for people age 50 and older in the United States. Membership in AARP is open to any person 50 years old or older. According to the AARP Web site, with 25 percent of the U.S. population in that category, nearly half of all people in the age bracket are AARP members.
The AARP vision is to develop a society in which everyone ages with dignity and purpose and in which AARP helps people fulfill their goals and dreams. Its mission is dedicated to enhancing quality of life for all as they age and to lead positive social change and deliver value to members through information, advocacy and service.
The organization was founded by retired high school principal Ethel Percy Andrus in 1958 as the National Retired Teachers Association to promote her philosowphy of productive aging, and to find retired teachers health insurance. She found success. She also found people outside the education community wanted to join. She expanded the program to the American Association of Retired People.
AARP is not for old people or the retired, but it s an image often associated with the group.
Especially amongst those 50 to 65, Carlson said. They think they re too young - more than half our members still are in jobs.
In fact, according to AARP statistics, 44 percent of AARP members work part- or full-time. For these reasons, AARP dropped the retired from its name, opting to become known only as AARP. The median age of AARP members is 65, and slightly more than half are women.
I signed my husband up as soon as he turned 50, because of the magazine and the great hotel discounts, Enumclaw Senior Activities Director Jobyna Nickum said.
She said the magazine is filled with pertinent information she and her husband use not only in planning their future, but to help them care for their aging parents, as well as topics their parents enjoy reading.
The magazine is aimed at the young, baby boomer set, Carlson said. And there s the advocacy work we do on the part of seniors.
Membership includes the bimonthly award-winning AARP The Magazine, which addresses the needs and concerns of the 50-plus population, including the 76 million strong baby boom generation. The magazine covers a broad range of topics, including health, finance and leisure. There is also an AARP Bulletin, published 11 times a year and the AARP Web site, which offers answers to financial planning questions, guidance on health and wellness, tips for coping with difficult life transitions, as well as opportunities to contact elected government officials, and participate in discussion groups and online courses.
But the insurance discounts seem to be the biggest draw.
There are insurance plans for car, dental, longterm, prescription drugs - any kind of insurance an older person may likely need, we probably have, Carlson said.
AARP can provide members with discounts on health insurance, mail-order pharmacueticals, automobile and homeowners insurance, life insurance, long-term health care insurance, travel discounts and programs, eye health services, investment programs, credit card services, motoring plans and a legal services network.
AARP members also can tap into programs regarding independent living, long-term care and end-of-life issues; a driver safety program; tax aide; a work-training program for low-income persons 55 years old and older.
Carlson said there are also wellness programs like discounts on gym memberships to Gold s or Curves, or discounts for personal trainers.
All for $12.50 a year and as simple as a phone call to the national help center at 1-888-OUR-AARP (1-888-687-2277) or going online to www.aarp.org. Membership covers the carrier and a spouse.
Jo Giddings of Buckley said she joined for the same reasons many people jump on board.
We (she and her husband Jerry) signed up when we were 50, she said. We dropped it for a while, but signed up again.
The couple renewed their membership five years ago to take advantage of the travel discounts. Giddings said she s also looking forward to using the vision discounts available.
I figure it costs me $1 a month and you get benies, she said. It s saving you money, that makes it kind of nice.
