The Australian Tourism Export Council is pushing for Australia to evolve as a leading medical tourism destination and says Queensland could potentially lead the way as the nation's biggest supplier of health holidays.

Medical tourism refers to the growing trend of foreigners travelling overseas to have medical procedures.

ATEC has predicted that a medical tourism industry to rival world leaders Thailand and India could net the local tourism market about $2.5 billion in the next five years.

Managing director Matthew Hingerty said many overseas markets, particularly America and Britain, were turning their heads internationally in search of high-quality but significantly cheaper health care.

A new report from Deloitte has found 750,000 Americans travelled overseas in search of medical care in 2007. That was expected to balloon to 6 million by 2010.

"The developed world is ageing," Mr Hingerty said. "There is great demand for this industry and we need to tap into it."

Queensland Tourism Minister Desley Boyle supported ATEC's commitment to expanding medical tourism but said the industry would have to rely heavily on the private health sector.

"While this is mainly an opportunity for the private sector, with Queensland's key convention centres attracting so many high-end health conferences, it is an area worth examining," Ms Boyle said.

But Australian Peter Davison, manager international services at the Phuket International Hospital in Thailand, said Australia would be unable to compete with overseas markets that provided similar quality care at cheaper prices.

"The quality (in Thailand) is the same but you'll pay a third of the cost," Mr Davison said.

He said plastic surgery continued to spur the majority of foreigners to head overseas for treatment, but he said dental and orthopaedic procedures were also common.

He said patients in many countries, including Australia, were on long waiting lists for procedures and were opting to fast-track treatments overseas.

"You've got people waiting and their quality of life is really deteriorating and then if they were to go through the private system the costs are enormous," he said. "In Thailand you can get a total hip replacement for about $10,000 which would cost $30,000 in Australia.

"Unless Australia is able to reduce its costs I don't see how it could compete."
